The Importance of Creating Your Own Space

Taking time out each day to relax and renew is essential to living well.

Judith Hanson Lasater

The last couple months for me has been really difficult. I've been slipping back into my negative way of thinking and the stress of life, being alone, and unhealthy phone habits has caused me to feel a bit emotional. I knew that I needed a safe zone. I’ve been living in the Boston area now for 9 months. It’s the first time I’ve ever lived completely on my own in a space that was all mine. A space in which I could do whatever I wanted. I am someone who values their personal space and likes to create a space where I can completely relax and be 100% myself. No matter what kind of day I was having, exciting, stressful, or hectic I knew that the importance of creating my own space was essential to my physical and mental well-being.

Sunshine, Coffee & a Fresh Day

What I love about my little home is the natural light I get from my corner windows. I can look out onto the courtyard, see the water and hear the trees rustle in the wind. It’s the first place I sit in the morning with my coffee and phone. I try each morning to be mindful and write in my Five-Minute Journal. It’s a great way for me to reflect on the morning, write down what I am grateful for and set the intentions for the day. It helps me live a happier life. My favorite candle from Hauswitch (a beautiful witchy store in Salem, MA) sits on the side table filling the room with earthy smells along with whatever I’m currently reading.

The Five-Minute Journal

The simplest, most effective thing you can do every day to be happier.

Next to a single window in my living room is not only the focal point of my entire apartment when you walk in but is also my altar where I meditate. I have bundles of sage for whenever my space needs a proper cleanse, a few tumble stones that promote self-love and spiritual exploration, a piece of art reminding me to never stop dreaming given to me by my mother, a little piece of nature (my resilient snake plant - I kill every plant I get but somehow this guy is still holding on) and a few other knick-knacks.

A place to meditate & Be Mindful

Train your brain to strengthen its capacity for calm.

Creating these spaces within my home is a personal reminder for myself to relax and renew. It’s a safe space for me to be alone and work on my thoughts and feelings. Every aspect of human senses plays a role in creating your own space. Some importance things I try to keep in mind and consider when adding to my space are, aroma, clutter, plant life, color and light. I try to keep my space as peaceful as possible. But most importantly, I fill my space with things I love that will make me happy.
